Grease Lightning!

Hi Everyone,

Today we went to see Grease The Musical which was performed by our local  high school. It was a wonderful performance full of brilliant acting, singing and musical talent.
We have created tagxedos of some of the ‘Grease Words’ and some of the 5 sense words that we brainstormed about.

5C, what was your favourite part of the Grease musical?

Wondering about Wonder

Hi Mums and Dads and Nans and Pops!

Our class novel this term is ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio. It’s been an international best seller since it hit book shelves in 2012. It was read last year with the 5/6s and they absolutely loved it.

It’s back cover reads a like this:

‘My name is August.
I won’t describe what I look like.
Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse’

‘You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out’

It is a beautiful story (in my opinion!) about friendship, character, family, acceptance, facing your fears, accepting challenges, disability vs ability, a little about life and death and a lot about being yourself.
The book does deal with some sensitive issues, like peer pressure and disability. For some students, I’m sure these topics will be sensitive, however we deal with all of these issues with lots of open minded discussion and opportunities for students to share their thoughts, concerns, wonderings and questions.

Because of the content of Wonder, it promotes so many wonderful conversations. If you’d like to know some more about Wonder, you can visit the official website of the book HERE.

I’d love to know what you think about the book or about any discussions that you have had with your kids about the book so far.

Plastic Free July!!

Do you know where your plastic bag goes after you throw it away?

Do you know what happens to your plastic drink bottle when you’re finished with it?

plastic bag

At school for the month of July (and a little bit of August too!) are participating in Plastic Free July.  Across the next few weeks, our grade will be participating in some plastic awareness activities.

The aim of Plastic Free July is to limit our use of single use plastics, like plastic bags, plastic packaging, plastic straws and plastic bottles. At school we are hoping to have a ‘nude food’ lunch day where we don’t have any single use plastic at all in our lunch boxes for a day.

Your family can take up the challenge if they like- you can try being plastic free for a week, a month or even a whole year.
This is the official Plastic Free July website:
The website has lots of great ideas for how you can reduce the amount of plastic in your day to day lives.

This website  has some really wow facts about plastic like…
A plastic cup can take 50-80 years to break down.
An estimated 13 BILLION plastic bottles are disposed of each year.
Plastic and other rubbish in the ocean kill up to 1 MILLION sea creatures every year.
Every year, Australians use 6.9 BILLION plastic bags every year.

Which plastic fact blew your mind? What do you think we could do to try and reduce the amount of plastic we use? Do you think it matters how much plastic we use? I’m keen to read your answers in the comments!
