What’s a rubric, you say?

It can look a little like this:

Have you seen one before? The rows on the LHS are where you write in the elements that you will be checking yourself off against- to make sure that you have these things in your letter. What things would you put here?


The numbers are how you might score yourself- maybe a 4 is the very very best example, a 1 might be that you have barely included that element…

When  you have written your poem, I would like you to post it on your blog. Once you have posted your poem, visit your LC and leave them some feedback on their poem.

What do you know?

We’re going to start having a look at the lead up to Federation, the actual event of Federation and then how Australia developed a ‘national identity’. But before we get too far into looking at this, you will need to do a good old bit of collecting what you already know for me….

It’s up to you how you choose to collect this information and present it to me. You could draw, write, make a quick video (nothing too fancy, mind you!), use book creator, Pic Collage or EE. You’ll need to keep what ever you create relatively short, as you will need to post what you create on your blog.

You must answer the questions below. Please put a little thought into your answers, spend some time thinking about each one. Some of them are simple one word or short sentence answers, others will require a longer response. Some you won’t know very much about yet, but I’m sure you would be able to have a guess.

Planning and drafting your letter

I can plan and draft a section of my letter.

I can include appropriate historical language to make my letter authentic.

I can use the 7 steps technique of show don’t tell.

I can collect a range of interesting and historical language to include in my letter.

Ensure you are using a range of dictionaries and thesauri to collect a range of interesting words.

Brainstorm the 6 senses to ensure you are including this language in your letter.


Copper Plate Handwriting

Develop a handwriting style that is legible, fluent and that can vary depending on context.

I understand that handwriting has evolved and changed over time for a variety of reasons.

Today we will have a look at the handwriting style you are expected to use for your good copy of your Sovereign Hill letter. Yes, it’s fancy. Yes, it’s a little bit tricky. But we will get the hang of it with a little practice.

Reflection about your Solar Boat experience

White/information/facts: If you were to do this project again, what information would you like to have before you begin?

Red/feelings: what emotions did you feel and why? Choose 3. What events contributed to these feelings?

Yellow/positives: What did you enjoy about Solar Boats, what were the great/fun/interesting things?

Black/negatives: What things did you find difficult/challenging about Solar Boats and why?

Green/changes: If you were to do Solar Boats again, what would you change? How would you like to prepare grade 5 students for Solar Boats?

Blue/ summaries/conclusions: This is a section for you to add your final thoughts about solar boats.

So, why did I choose feathers in my hair, wings, an underwater scene?

My shirt is purple, it’s my favourite colour.
A black skirt matches with nearly everything.
A pony tail for my hair is relaxed and fuss free.
Purple converse, I just wish I had a pair!
Feathers in my hair to represent my love for birds and our native wildlife.
The wings show that I would love to fly and that I love the beautiful, little things in life.
An underwater scene represents my favourite memory- snorkeling off the QLD coast with colourful fish and turtles.
And my happy smile to top it all off!
